Did you know diapers have some not so great chemicals in them! Not all of us can do cloth diapers, but not all disposable diapers are the same. Here is my list of non toxic diapers including $10 off the brand we use and chemicals to avoid!

Studies show there are toxic chemicals in disposable diapers that are absorbed through the skin and lungs. This is a huge concern because the genitals have a high absorption rate and babies wear them 24/7 for 2-3 years. That means constant exposure to these harmful chemicals!
Companies are not legally required to list their ingredients but many do. So in today’s natural-minded movement, the more on their “NO” list, the better.
THANKFULLY, most diapers are Totally chlorine-free (TCF) or Elemental chlorine-free (ECF) which means there are no dioxins or largely less than what we see in our food and soil.
In order to find non toxic diapers, you need to know the chemicals to look out for:
Fragrances/Lotions: This is a title used to hide toxins like phthalates because it helps the scent last longer. Phthalates are linked to cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, disrupting endocrine function, birth defects, and respiratory issues. (Source) (Source #2)
Dyes: usually petroleum based & contain heavy metals (source)
Phthalates: developmental & reproductive toxicants, hormone disrupter and possible carcinogen. (source)
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): can evaporate & damage immune, liver, kidney, & lungs. Risk for neurocognitive impairment & cancer. (Source)(Source#2)
Tributyltin(TBT): (Used to prevents growth of microorganisms) It its highly toxic and an endocrine disruptor. According to the 1993 Cornell University study, it damages the liver & kidney with long exposure. It also irritates the eyes skin and mucous membranes. (Source)
Dioxins: Highly toxic chemical compounds known to cause cancer, reproductive and developmental issues, immune disruption, and hormone imbalance. (Source)
Yikes! It is shocking to think companies know these dangerous chemicals are inside but do not share this information on the labels!
What is actually in disposable diapers:
- Pesticide-free Bamboo fibers: (best option but more $$) naturally antibacterial, thermo-regulating, odor resistant
- SAP: Super absorbant polymer or Sodium Polyacrylate. Gel like crystals in the core.
- Petroleum based plastic (SAP/PP/PE) or one of the best non toxic diapers option, plant based plastic (PLA)
So what do we do with all of this info? I mean moms do not have the time to email each company to see what they do or do not use in their product, right?
Before checking out my list on non toxic diapers, here are some things to remember:
💚 No mom guilt allowed! Just awareness for the next time you think about buying diapers.
💛 There are tons of other brands out there. I just chose a few more common ones and hopefully gave you some tools to do your own digging.
🧡 Maybe try rotating diaper brands if you can’t afford to always buy the best ones.
❤️ Beware of buzz words like : natural, eco-friendly, plant based, or hypoallergenic. The FDA doesn’t regulate these terms so they might not mean what you think they do.
Here is my rating with the best non toxic diapers in yellow!
